Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826), 3er Presidente de los EEUU. Su oposición al Banco de los Estados Unidos fue feroz: «Creo, sinceramente, con ustedes, que los establecimientos bancarios son más peligrosos que los ejércitos permanentes y que el principio de gastar dinero para ser pagado por la posteridad, bajo el nombre de la financiación, es sin embargo una estafa futura a gran escala». Sin embargo Madison y el Congreso, al ver el caos financiero causado por la guerra de 1812, hicieron caso omiso de sus consejos y crearon el segundo banco de los Estados Unidos en 1816.
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.
